A painter who is also a designer

Local Brushes is Gaelen Mitchell — owner, painter & designer. He has been painting Nashville houses since 2016, and he still walks every job himself.

Where the standard comes from

From 2008 to 2010 Gaelen was on the paint crew for Jack White’s properties and the Third Man Records building. That kind of work does not let you hide anything behind a second coat, and the habits stuck: fill it, sand it, caulk it, mask it, and only then open the paint.

Design is not a separate service

Gaelen works as a designer as well as a painter. Color gets decided by looking at the light your rooms actually get, at different times of day — not by holding a fan deck up in a hallway for thirty seconds. If you already know exactly what you want, great. If you do not, that is part of the job.

The paint

We use Farrell-Calhoun, a family-owned company that has been making paint in Tennessee since 1905. It is mixed for our climate, and most of what we use is low-VOC, so your house is livable again quickly.
